I really enjoy hitchhiking.
I’ve done it twice a day for the past three months so it’s got to the point where I know most of the people who stop to give me a ride.
There’s John who now takes me up the hill with his binoculars and shows me the surf breaks on the other side of the lagoon and points out the flora and fauna and bird species ‘round and about.
Then there’s the new partner of Solscape’s owner’s ex-wife, (if you’re still following me), the girl who has to hotwire her car every time we set off, Wendy and Dave, our neighbours (with the cows), Aaron the policeman, Murray the surf instructor, Crazy Richard the local nutcase, Hippy-artist-marine-biologist chick, Boy-racers who are invariably staying at the Bible Camp, Surfer Ben in his Jaguar, Greg in his work van, Kylie and Paul who have parties in their garage, Charlie and Erin who have parties in their Wigwam (Teepee, more properly, apparently), Tim and Suze from Karioi, Rock from Raglan surf school, American Bill and his dog, Lucy……
they probably see me and think 'shoot, she's seen us, now we have to give her a lift again...'
ho ho.
